Anybody willing to do a step by step pictoral or word discription of how one would bed/cover the trap in 5' of snow for a novice(understatement)? Ive bedded 6 footholds in my life. Want to set for red foxes. In a field or by/on top of a frozen pond with cattails at one end. Foxes are running the pond edge every couple nights. I am planning to put a cable or two in nearby, but really want to set a couple footholds.
Please make sure to include options for what screen or material to put under the trap and/or over the pan to hold the choppings or snow on top from getting down under the pan. Owen It looks like you are doing it right, with the right amount of pipe sticking out and and correct, slight angle towards trap.in a sod field. That's where the sets shines and where I needed to make something better work. Zagman Thanks for the tip on the set.
I am on the coast and we are really wet, impossible to put in a dirt hole without it filling with water so this is working great, keeping the bait working or lure working. I am putting them in grass clumps and have one on a woods road.

The one on the woods road is basically covered with oak leaves and has seen action the last two nights. I'm not sure what is hitting it, could be coons as its impossible to make out any tracks on the leaf covered road. There is a flat set 10 yards away that hasn't seen any action at all. I like the set, it has real potential, thanks again for the tip.

Maybe our ground is harder.that 5-6-7 inches in the ground usually seems enough to hold it in place. Often, like in Owen's pic, its still right where I pounded it. If not, it is in the circle or a few feet out side of the fight circle. I assume that bite it, pull it, and flip it.
Have had a few eaten, but far less eaten than T-bones. When I pull a set AND pull the pipe, I usually have to put my channel locks on the pipe, twist and pull. That resistance should aid the trapper when a coyote tries to pull it with his mouth, as he MUST shuffle around, move his feet, and hopefully hit your kill area.
